FROM SLAVERY TO PROMISE

Lesson 6 – Exodus 16-18

“God saw the people of Israel – and God knew.” Exodus 2:25

I.  What observations did you make regarding Exodus 16-18? (Who, What, Where, When, Why, Wherefore, Terms, Repetition, Cause/Effect)

Exodus 16 –

Exodus 17 –

Exodus 18 –

II. What interpretations did you discover in your research?

Exodus 16

Do you recall what the conditions were like in Egypt?  Compare that to these verses  (v. 1-2)

What New Testament references can you find regarding manna from heaven? (v. 7)

What is different about the gathering for preparation of the Sabbath and every other day?  Is there some scientific explanation for this one day difference?  What does this say about God?  (v. 24-25)

Exodus 17

Do you wonder how many times the people of Israel grumble about the “good ole days” of being in Egypt?  When we experience changes that we may perceive as negative in the moment, is it perhaps an improper reflection on the past? (v. 3)

How did God provide water for the people (remember this because it will come up later)? (v. 6)

Is it likely the people of Israel fought any more or less in this battle?  What does this say about out ability to work and do better apart from faith and obedience in God’s Word?  (v. 8-13)

Exodus 18

Who is Jethro, and under what name have we previously heard about him? (v. 1)

What was the importance of Jethro’s advice to Moses?  Did it have any bearing on how the temple, synagogue, and the church ultimately organize itself?  Any New Testament references come to mind?

III. What applications can we take from Exodus 16-18?

(Is there an example to follow, a sin to avoid, a promise to claim, a prayer to repeat, command to obey, condition to meet, verse to memorize, error to mark, or a challenge to face?)

Personally?

For the whole church?
